About Hop Toi Candle Co.

Hi, I'm Hayley, the founder of Hop Toi Candle Co.

Hop Toi is a mahjong-themed candle company based in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Every candle is made for the people who make game night happen: the hostess setting the table and gathering the group, the friend who always brings the snacks, and the bubbly player who keeps everyone laughing throughout the game.

I fell in love with the rituals of the game, the beautiful tablescapes, and the cozy feeling of community around the table. I created this company to celebrate those things, and as a way to create and contribute while also being a stay-at-home mom to two joyful little children. 

What's in a name?

In mahjong, a "Hop Toi" is a lucky moment during the deal, the kind of thing players love to call out across the table. That little spark of luck and joy is exactly what I wanted to share with my mahjong community and hope others want to spread to theirs.

Our candles

Each candle is poured in Charleston, SC, finished with a bamboo lid, and comes with a colorful pair of dice in a pouch, so you can bring your own Hop Toi to the table. The scents are named for the tiles and calls players know by heart: Save Your Flowers, Jolly for Jokers!, Bird Bam! Cheers! and Hop Toi Bring Me Joy!

The Red Dragon

You'll spot 中, the Red Dragon tile, on everything we make. It's our house mark and a nod to the game that started it all.

The Red Dragon is seen as a symbol of good fortune, which is why it makes the perfect partner.

Hop Toi Candle Co. was established during the year of the fire horse, which is associated with red and represents the primary fire element, bringing luck and success!
